Local number porting (LNP) is the ability for a customer to switch their telephone number from one service provider to another without changing their physical location. This process is also known as number portability or porting.
LNP is a valuable tool for customers
who are dissatisfied with their current service provider or who want to take advantage of a better deal from another provider. It also gives businesses the flexibility to change their phone numbers without losing their customers.
LNP is regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States and by similar agencies in other countries. The FCC’s rules require service providers to allow customers to port their numbers within five days of receiving a porting request.
2. How LNP Works
The LNP process involves a series of steps that must be completed by both the customer and the service providers involved. The following is a step-by-step guide to the LNP process:
- Choose a new service provider. The first step in the LNP process is to choose a new service provider. There are many factors to consider when choosing a new provider, such as price, features, and customer service.
Contact your new service provider:
- Once you have chosen a new service provider, you will need to contact them to initiate the porting process. Your new provider will ask you for your current phone number, your account number with your current provider, and your billing address.

Your current provider will have five days to approve or deny the porting request:
